Capturing Melbourne: A 4-Day Rollercoaster

Updated: Mar 17

Back to Busy Life

Alright, so it's been a wild ten months since I traded in my entrepreneur hustle for the 9-to-5 life. Those five years before were all about leading tours, trekking through nature, and basically being the Indiana Jones of photography.

Since October 2018, work's been quite hectic, leaving my camera gears neglected for ten long months. But then came the call from Melbourne, not for leisure, but a quick two-day conference followed by an extra day for airport shenanigans.

A Short Stint

Now, I didn't have much time to play explorer or wildlife photographer during this short stint, but I saw it as an opportunity to throw my camera into the mix with no concrete plans.

Landing in Melbourne in the dead of winter, I found myself twiddling my thumbs at the hotel for what felt like an eternity. But hey, fellow travelers and I decided to make the most of it by hitting up the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), just a breezy 10-minute walk from our hotel. The tour turned out to be a blast - stories about classic matches, MCG management, and the behind-the-scenes of prepping the ground for both cricket and football games.

Aussies have a special love, when it comes to cricket. The attention paid to detail to get the ground perfectly right for a match they put a framework that supports huge sun lamps positioned in those parts of the ground that get more shade than the other sections, ensuring adequate light for even growth of grass.

Conference days were full-on, but I managed to sneak in some solo strolls in the evenings. There's something strangely satisfying about wandering the streets of a foreign city alone, camera in hand.

The Last Day in Melbourne

Fast forward to our last day - we snagged a car and hit the Great Ocean Road. Erskine Waterfalls, a chocolate factory pitstop, and a quick visit to Lorne Beach filled our day. Being the lone photographer in the crew, I was the designated memory maker.

I visited the iconic Flinders Street Railway Station and met a couple of friends studying in Melbourne. We spent a few hours shooting the trails and streets.

It was time to head back to the hotel as we didn’t have enough time for us to visit the 12 Apostles.

There is always a next time… and now it was to do some shopping and head straight to the airport to catch my flight back to Bangalore.

A pleasant time photographing this beautiful place, Melbourne, I fell in love with during my short visit.

Here are a few more images I made during my stay.
